Clash of Kings 2017

Last weekend Mantic Games hosted the Clash of Kings 2017 event at Firestorm Games in Cardiff. A two day, six game Kings of War tournament in the UK. I attended last year and had a great time and as such decided to fly over once again. Having only won one game last year with my Elves, I set myself the target of at least two wins. In order to give myself the best possible chance I painted up a new army, which I had never played before and contained sub-optimal choices. It’s the price one pays for being a hobbyist first and gamer second!

Herd Army for CoK 2017

In preperation for Clash of Kings 2017 (a ~100 player tournament in the UK) I decided to create a new army. Last year I played Elves with a nice mix of infantry, cavalry and shooting. This year I decided to resurrect some of my old Warhammer Beastmen miniatures and repurpose them for Kings of War.

In addition I added some wonderful new models, like the War Bull from Scibor Miniatures and an awesome looking charging pig (called a Torvax) from Mierce Miniatures. I then rebased everything onto new multi-bases, added some incidental skulls and arrows and I was done.

Clash of Kings 2016

Last month I attended the largest Kings of War tournament in Europe - Clash of Kings 2016. It was once again held in the UK at the Sanctuary and with only 80 tickets available was a sell out (next year there will be 120 tickets available).

Kings of War is currently my favourite wargame and although we have a nice (if small) community of players here in Berlin, the chance to attend such a large event was a chance not to be missed.

Age of Sigmar Warlords Tournament

The first official Age of Sigmar tournament using points from the General's Handbook took place at Warhammer World back in September. I attended with my rebased onto round bases Skaven army, ready to secure the realm of Nottingham for all of Ratkind.

I wasn't expecting to do very well, having virtually no experience whatsoever. In the lead up to the tournament I spent most of my time either painting or playing Kings of War and as such only managed to get 3 practice games in - at least I knew the rules (sort of).

My main aim was to win at least 1 game!

Warhammer World

Back in September I went to Warhammer World for the Warlords Age of Sigmar event and whilst I was there I visited the Miniature Gallery.

Clash of Kings Preparation

At the end of the Week I'm flying over to England to play in the Clash of Kings 2016 event. This is the largest Kings of War tournament of the year with 80 players and the largest I've ever attended -  I'm expecting the standard of play to be pretty high. I'm really excited and hope I don't get destroyed too badly!

KoW vs AoS vs The 9th Age

Exactly one year ago today the world of Fantasy Wargaming changed significantly. One of the oldest and most popular games, Warhammer Fantasy Battle, was ended by Games Workshop and replaced with a new game called Age of Sigmar. Naturally, lots of players and hobbyists were unhappy and some even went to extreme lengths to show their displeasure. One year on, I feel that this is a golden era for Fantasy Wargaming.

How to Choose a Wargame

I have recently questioned why I like Fantasy Wargaming and exactly what is important to me when choosing a game to play. As such, I have decided to list what I consider to be the various factors involved in choosing a game and how I would prioritize them. Here's the list I came up with and my order.

Multi-basing Elves for Kings of War

I'm slowly going through a process of multi-basing a number of my armies for Kings of War. The best thing about KoW, in my opinion, is that it allows for multi-basing, because individual miniatures do not need to be removed as casualties.

My favourite Fantasy Armies

Like everyone, I enjoy a good list and as such, here is a list of my favourite fantasy armies.

1. Dwarfs

Dwarfs are small, stout people with prominent features and long beards. I like miniatures because they are small (among other reasons) and Dwarfs are some of the smallest. Angry, grumpy and often drunk, Dwarfs are possibly the complete opposite of myself, but for some reason they have always appealed to me. Every chance I get, I choose to play as the Dwarf - in D&D, board games and of course, wargames.

Why do I like Fantasy Wargaming?

In the late 80's and early 90's Games Workshop and the games they produced were starting to appeal to a generation of kids and early teens. I fall into this generation and my story is similar to many others my age.

Kings of War 3500 points

A few weeks ago I played in a 3500 points game of Kings of War. It was Elves (me) and Brotherhood versus Varangur and Night Stalkers. The game was played on a 8' x 4' table with plenty of terrain. A basic kill scenario was used, but the main aim was simply to have fun. In the end the bad guys were victorious, crushing the Human - Elf alliance and destroying all in their path.
